# Open vs closed source software Open software is software for which the source code is available to anybody and often it can be changed and reused by anybody for any purpose. Closed software is a software made for profit with a restricted license that protects its authors and limits its usage for certain period and certain purposes. Its source code is not available to public in most cases. # Example of open source software: - Firefox browser, Mozilla Thunderbird # Example of closed source software: - google chrome, Safari, Edge and many other - all MS products such as Office, all Apple products. Also operating systems could be open (Linux kernel based, BSD flavours) or closed source (Windows, MacOS). I would gladly use only open source code software and OS but unfortunately the following reasons prevent me from doing so full time: - work related applications are only available in MS windows - some cloud providers I have to use are only available for MacOS and Windows (few for Linux though) - many people around use closed source OS and apps and expect my support and guidance to fix many of their problems
